4 Top Design Trends for 2017

Terracotta, tuxedo, cork and kilim. These four design trends are expected to flood Pinterest boards and interiors in 2017. From the latest issue of our digital home design magazine, Beautiful Design Made Simple, we’ve compiled our favorite pins inspired by these top trends.

TERRACOTTA

From terracotta tiling to terracotta-clad walls, the distinct coloring of the naturally-derived earthenware adds instant warmth and dimension to any space. So distinct, in fact, that even a little bit of this beautiful hue can make a big difference within a room. So if new paint or tiling isn’t in the cards, don’t worry, you can expect to see an increasing amount of terracotta-inspired decor items from home design retailers throughout the year.

TUXEDO KITCHENS

Elegant, simple and balanced, tuxedo kitchens offer homeowners a classic look with striking, contemporary contrast. The classic combo also compliments another rising trend in kitchen & bath – mixed metals. From lighting to plumbing to hardware, designers and homeowners alike are experimenting with finish combinations such as the popular matte black and brass.

CORK

With natural textiles and materials continuing to gain popularity in interior design, it’s no surprise that cork has been positioned as one of 2017’s top trends for interiors. We just LOVE this cork wall both for its visual appeal and practicality. This design is perfectly suited to an office, kitchen or kids room space, but don’t discriminate! This trend can be incorporated just about anywhere. Other ways to include cork within the home? Flooring, of course. If new floors are on your 2017 to-do list, don’t make the mistake of not considering cork. The super-resilient, super-supportive flooring product is not only gorgeous, it’s eco-friendly and naturally hypoallergenic.

KILIM PRINT

Boasting unique geometric patterns and remarkable coloring, kilim print adds head-turning interest to any space. Not comfortable with bold print or color? Start small. Purchase a single throw pillow like the beautiful piece below and display within a neutral room. We promise, this small touch of kilim won’t disappoint. Feeling brave? Purchase a runner for your hall or kitchen. Again, it’s nearly impossible to go wrong with this traditional print!

3 Tips for Preparing Your Flooring for Winter

The holidays are right around corner again, and that means colder temperatures, snow, dirt mixed with snow, etc., are all rounding that same corner too.

Now, while some people dread this time of the year and others love it, there are some aspects of the season that everyone needs to prepare for, whether you like it or not.

We’ve seen all kinds of winters and have tried all sorts of ways to better prepare floor surfaces for the season, so we compiled these tips to help you ready your flooring for the coming winter months.

1. Keep the climate consistent.

Whether it’s a hot and humid summer or a dry, cold winter, drastic climate changes present a multitude of flooring problems, particularly commercial and residential hardwood flooring problems.

Hardwood floors are in a constant state of adaptation depending on the changing humidity levels in the space. In sticky summers, hardwood floor planks will expand and in cold winters, they’ll contract, which could eventually lead to gaps appearing between them.

For more on preventing cupping and crowning issues, check out this previous post, Hardwood Flooring Tips: How to Handle Cupping and Crowning Issues, but the point is, you need to take control of the climate in your home or workspace during the cold months and make sure it’s regulated in some way.

2. Lay down the rules and clean up FAST!

Another aspect of the winter months to consider in terms of your flooring is the mess the season typically creates. Whether it’s snow, snow and mud, snow and leaves, etc., a lot of dirt and debris could find its way onto your floor surface in the winter.

So, lay down some winter rules, especially if you’ll be having company for the holidays. You can put up signs telling guests to remove their shoes at the door, strategically lay down some extra mats in high-traffic areas, etc.

From there, when the inevitable muddy footprint with a sprinkle of rock salt—which is particularly lethal to hardwood surfaces—appears, or the customary holiday party spill occurs, have all the necessary cleaning materials nearby so that you can get to the spot as quickly as possible.

On that note, make sure you keep up with your regular cleaning during the winter months as well. Whether it’s sweeping, vacuuming, mopping, etc., you don’t want to let anything sink in nor allow any debris to cause scuffs or scratches simply because you didn’t act fast enough.

3. Consider your pet situation.

Another huge flooring issue in the winter months is the potential damage that household pets can cause. After all, you can come up with some ground rules and put signs up for guests, co-workers, etc., but they won’t do much good when it comes to your pets.

We don’t claim to be animal experts, so there’s not much we can offer you as far as how to go about training your pets, but the point is, some training is usually in order to protect your floor surfaces.

The best best is usually to come up with some type of treat system for training pets to remain at the entrance-way when they enter so that you can clean their feet or paws before they rush in, dragging snow, mud, and salt with them.

The bottom line is that, whether you love the winter months or dread their arrival every year and need to prepare yourself for the season, you need to take measures to prepare your flooring as well. We hope these tips get you pointed in the right direction.

Dynamic design: Inspired by the Summer Olympics – Rio 2016

As we look back to Summer as it fade away, we think about design inspiration from the Summer Olympics. We can’t help feel but charmed by the vibrant landscape that matches the energy of the host nation. Inspired by the alluring and dynamic spirit of Brazil, we take a look at the three elements that embody the essence of modern Brazilian interior design and styling.

Color

Whether it’s the vibrant national costume of Brazil or the dazzling opening ceremony, don’t be afraid to embrace color that brings to life the effervescent spirit of Brazil. The use of bright accessories and furniture helps accentuate and draw the eye to the key statement pieces in your room. For those who to like to experiment, try using unexpected color combinations to add visual interest to your space.

Eclectic styling

With its vast cultural diversity and complex colonial past, it’s hard to pinpoint an exact style that represents Brazil. That’s why you’ll notice mix of styles, combining various elements from different periods and origins. By filling the home with a mix of decorative handcrafted objects, antique furnishings and modern flooring, you can tell a story about your space and provide a personal sense of style to a room.

Natural materials

A hybrid of outdoors and in, natural materials are a fundamental element in Brazilian design. The tropical nature of Brazil means that homeowners are looking for design that integrates outdoor living. Rustic timbers like Da Vinci Beach Driftwood and Travertine stones like Art Select Gallatin help transition indoor areas into outdoor, in a fluid space.

Brand New: A Look at the new Mohawk Floors

I thought I’d share a big full reveal though in it’s own post and show you the rest of the home. I think it’s pretty clear the before and after is pretty drastic, don’t you think? You can see the before of the dining and kitchen here. To say that I’m pleased, is an understatement. I absolutely love my new Mohawk ArmorMax floors for more than the obvious reason of them looking great.

My old floors had a very loud hallow sound to them and anytime I walked in heels, or even Pork walked around, it was very loud in the house. Now with these new hardwood floors from Mohawk, I barely hear Pork creeping up on me to beg for food. She’s like a ninja. I was nervous about darker floors as they tend to show scratches and any wear and tear more so than light ones. I have worn my high heels in the house, Pork has run around like a maniac, and not one scratch at all. The ArmorMax technology is tough and durable and designed for high traffic areas.

It’s definitely safe to say that I’m pretty pleased with the before and after and am so glad I made the switch. The process (which you can read more about here and here) was easy and seamless.  Now I have a full Mohawk home as my bedroom carpet is also Mohawk. If you’re looking for carpet, I recommend the Smartstrand Silk as it literally feels like silk. I find myself sitting on the floor with Pork for way longer than I normally should.

If you’re looking to do a little home renovating and updating your floors, this is a quick project (roughly 2-3 days) and makes a huge difference in the overall look and feel of your home.

This post was written in collaboration with Mohawk. All opinions and views are my own.
